Chiaroscuro Bookcase 001 uses natural materials to explore the space at the intersection of darkness and light, and examines antiquity through a modern lens. In the design of this piece we compressed a classic Greek key pattern then expanded the form into one more familiar to a modernist master such as Richard Neutra. The middle shelf, though it appears to float as a cantilever, is discretely supported by an unlacquered brass rod (that also serves as a decorative end cap). The shelves can support an ample library. The case top is made of slate reclaimed from old billiards tables.
Materials: Ash, brass, repurposed slate.
Chiaroscuro Bookcase 001 was milled, assembled and finished by hand in Olympia, WA.
